

Gregory Dean Unzicker was born on September 8, 1949 to Calvin and Lucille Unzicker in Dodge City, Kansas. He was educated at St. James School and graduated high school at the Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1967. He helped pay for food with a paper route. He played guitar and was in a band with his brother.
He was inducted into the Army on May 26, 1969 after he got married to his wife Karen. He completed 8 weeks of basic training at Fort Leonardwood. He was then transferred to Fort Ord, CA for advanced training for 8 weeks, then Non-Commissioned Officers training for 13 weeks at Fort Benning, Georgia. He came home for leave after training and he left from Washington for Vietnam on June 2, 1970. He was assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division. On July 17, 1970, an element of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Calvary Division engaged an undetermined size enemy force 11 miles North Northwest of Phuoc Binh. Enemy losses were unknown while the United States casualities were four killed and seven wounded. One of those was Staff Sergeant Gregory D. Unzicker. He was 20 years old. Survivors reported that while they were on patrol, they were ambushed by the Viet Cong. After his death, Sergeant Unzicker was posthumously promoted to Staff Sergeant.
Gregory was a collector of baseball cards and he liked to fish. He was good at everything he did. He is remembered on the Vietnam wall in Washington D.C. on panel 08W, line 024.
He left behind his wife Karen, now deceased, and a baby daughter, Stacey who was born 6 weeks after her dad died.
Also surviving were brothers David, Leon, Tim who is deceased and 3 sisters, Theresa, Dena and Mary.
