LT ROBERT L. CORMIER

Robert L. Cormier was born on July 1, 1938 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the son of Arthur and Diana Cormier.  He joined the Air Force right out of high school and served from 1955-1958.

In 1959, he moved to Dallas, Texas and joined the Dallas Police Department. Over the next 25 years, he worked as a patrol officer, a patrol Sergeant, and as an instructor at the Dallas Police Academy specializing in Ethics Training. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in 1973.

His last post was Commander of the Dallas Police Helicopter Section. In that capacity, he became involved with the Airborne Law Enforcement Association, serving on the Executive Board and as editor of the Association's magazine, "Air Beat". For the past 35 years, the ALEA has awarded the annual Robert L. Cormier award to an individual or group whose actions have perpetuated the professionalism and advancement of airborne law enforcement in public service.

On July 24, 1984 Lt. Cormier and his chief pilot Chuck Taylor were killed when their helicopter struck a communications tower while scouting locations for emergency evacuation of VIPs during the Republican National Convention which was held in Dallas that year.

Lt. Cormier was active in the Knights of Columbus and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, having been a season ticket holder since their days playing in the Cotton Bowl in the early 60s. He will always be remembered by his wife Mary, daughter Debbie, and four sons, Michael, Paul, David and Jeffrey as a loving husband and father, a loyal friend, a courageous public servant, and a fiercely patriotic American.
